What is an SSD?
An SSD (solid state drive) is, first of all, a storage medium just like a hard drive or a USB thumb drive. In contrast to the other storage technologies, however, an SSD uses Flash memory technology. An SSD drive is integrated in the server and used just like a conventional hard drive. Tests have confirmed the assumption that SSD drives far outweigh traditional hard drives not only in terms of speed, but also in durability and reliability.
For example, SSD drives are up to 3.9 times faster in reading and 3.5 times faster in writing to the storage medium. Because there are no movable parts in operating an SSD, in contrast to a conventional hard drive, they are completely failure-free and extremely fast. The high-quality performance is recognizable in the price. An SSD hard drive costs more per gigabyte than a SATA hard drive. Additionally, the traditional hard drives still include higher maximum storage capacities.
